Natural Treatment For Depression

Treating depression does not have to mean hours of therapies or days driven by pills. Though they may be effective methods to depression treatment, one may prefer having natural treatment for depression. Complimentary therapy use in mental health treatment continues to gain popularity. Many people go for physical exercises, herbal supplements, and mind-body sessions which have the power to alter the brain chemistry. Most of these treatments are safe. However, they are not always proven to be effective.

Herbal extracts

Herbal extracts are increasingly gaining prominence as natural alternatives to SSRI’s stimulants which can contain unpleasant side effects. Curcumin, one of the primary active ingredients in turmeric is a safe and alternative natural treatment for individuals who do not display suicidal ideation or those with concurrent psychotic disorder. St. John’s Wort has also been used for many years to treat mental health disorders. It is commonly prescribed to depression patients in Europe. Though it is widely known to contain some side effects, it is effective in treating mild depression cases. Moreover, SAM-e when consumed as supplements, they aid in manufacturing of brain chemicals that are responsible for mood regulation. Mental health experts believe that it is an effective treatment in relieving symptoms of depression just like tricyclic antidepressants do. However, herbal treatment method does not necessarily mean safe or efficient treatment but it has had its role to play in treating depression. 

Enhanced diet

Through an enhanced diet, one can boost the brain serotin levels. Some of the serotin enhanced foods include omega- fatty acids from wild salmon, herring, anchovies, and sardines. Other healthy fats such as the coconut oil and high protein diets with high tryptophan such as the free-range turkey help to boost serotin which helps to curb depression.


Exercises are a natural treatment for depression that minimize perceived anxiety and depression. Yoga practice for instance can manage stress response systems by easing respiration, lowering the blood pressure, and lessen heart rate. According to various researches, yoga does relieve symptoms of depression and the impacts are long-term. Yoga includes activities such as controlled breathing combined with a short session of deep relaxation and meditation. Meditation actively trains the mind to accept feelings and thoughts of that present time without judgment. This allows the mind and body to relax hence reducing depressive periods from the victim. 

Daily exercise aids in lowering stress, increasing relaxation and lessening depression symptoms. It has an added advantage of improving balance, flexibility as well as energy levels. Physical exercises also improve levels of serotins within the brain which helps to maintain the brain health. Sleep patterns are also normalized by exercises and this allows individuals to return to their normal activities.

 While many alternative treatments exist, a number of benefits will be realized over time. Thus, it might be helpful for patients with depression disorder to bring some of these natural treatment options to their treatment plan to help lessen the depression symptoms.
