  • 1.  With No practical work experience, can the CMA still help me?

    Posted 05-20-2020 09:52 AM
    Good morning all,

I am interested in becoming a CMA, but I am wondering if this credential can help me break into accounting.

    Education
BBA (Bachelor of Business Administration) in Management from UMass 2011
    Associate degree in Accounting 2019

    Work Experience (Contract work)
Accounts Payable (AP) Clerk (February-May 2018)
    Administrative Coordinator (June-July 2018)
    AP Associate (September 2018-April 2019)
    Junior Accountant (December 2019-January 2020)

Can the CMA credential still help me?
I learned recently that the accounting profession is not too open to black people. Would that explain my difficulty to secure steady employment in the field?

    Thank you in advance.

Yes!  I have found that the CMA provides confidence to really dig in to management accounting as a thought leader, versus having to learn the job.  For example, I just transitioned to consulting work, and now I'm working with clients using systems I haven't used before.  BUT, understanding and really thoroughly knowing the management accounting practices and techniques, I feel confident knowing that the processes are the same, the system just looks different.  I also have been able to move past understanding to providing discussion and change practices that have helped to rebrand accounting as a more accessible and daily resource to other teams in the companies I've worked for.

I love working with smaller companies in the startup phase and I think you might find a foothold there.  With fewer resources, they can't offer the same pay or department size as other companies, but that allows a motivated individual to show off the range of your skills and management abilities.  You'll find a greater chance of upward mobility in those levels of companies as they are more willing to promote from within!
