Theoretically, you can pass from the MCQ only but you should answer more than 95 questions correctly witch is hard :).
If you pass MCQ it means you answered at least 50% of the questions correctly, so you will never know how much you need in the essay part to pass.
from my experience the essay cover all the subjects, they give you 2 scenarios, each one with 6 to 7 questions, sometimes the questions not related to the scenario directly.

1) are the essay questions on one topic? or one essay could cover many topics?
