  • 1.  Calculator to use

    Posted 02-03-2020 04:26 PM
    Good day everyone,

I am curious about the better calculator to use for the exam.  I only have the very basic one and am contemplating buying one like the TI BAII Plus mentioned in the CMA Handbook as an approved calculator.  Any thoughts on which calculator to use for the exam?  I would appreciate any feedback on this.

    Thank you very much,
    Rebecca

For Part 1, I used the basic calculator.  I believe that is all you need.  I don't recall calculating NPV in Part 1.

For Part 2, I plan on using the TI BAII Plus because I feel I can calculate NPV faster vs. wasting time and trying to find the rates on those horrible PV tables.

    Hey,

    Good day,

For my both papers I have used only the basic 12 DIGITS calculators. And I never felt slow. Because I had used this one from the beginning.

And what am recommending is , use the same calculator which you have used for the preparation. Because you have to be familiar with the calculator otherwise it will make you slow in the exam.

So, do not buy any new calculator only for the exam if you already completed the your preparation. Or if you are going to start the preparation then go on !!!

And as per my knowledge , the only advantage of this calculator is calculations related to NPV. But you have to learn how to use it.

I hope you got my point :D

    Best wishes for you Exam,

    Hello Rebecca,

    Good day to you

Believe me my friend, CMA exam has enough (Time) stress to worry about rather than the calculator, scratch paper ..etc
I had Part-1 exam before, also I passed FMVA and CA exams, I used only my simple (4) functions calculator Casio J5-40V model.
You don't need more than simple one, since PV tables can be presented on screen by one click to pick-up only (1) or (2) rates maximum.

I advise everyone to use the same calculator being used at work / office, or similar (Simple) one with big clear buttons. This will speed up the calculation and avoid mistyping.

Wish you all the best & success

    Kind regards

    Good day everyone

Small battery- or solar-powered electronic calculators restricted to a maximum of six functions- addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, square root, and percentage-are allowed. The calculator must not be programmable and must not use any type of tape. Candidates can also use Texas Instruments' BA II Plus, HP 10bII+, HP 12c, or HP 12c Platinum calculators when taking the exams. The Hewlett-Packard 10BII is valid, but no longer available for purchase. Candidates will not be allowed to use calculators that do not comply with these restrictions.
