  • 1.  How to prepare theory?

    Posted 03-29-2021 11:27 PM
I am aiming to appear for part 2 exam in June window this year. I am reading a lot of theory from Hock books. I am immensely confused how to prepare for questions that will come from theory. For example, I was reading about working capital management and short term financing for it? Do i need to retain each and every point about it?
    For example, points like:
    1. Commercial paper is issued in $100,000 minimum amounts with higher denominations available in increments of $1,000.
    2. Bankers' Acceptances are created for terms of between 30 days and 180 days.

I am most confused in what statements are true, what statements are not correct about a particular topic.

Also, can anyone please direct me to samples of essay questions? What kind of theory is asked in these questions?

    Any answer is highly appreciated.

    Hi,
For Part 2, please prepare the thoroughly for theory. I was told that Theory is easy and will come from two sections only but at exam, I was clueless coz the theory they asked in both the essay questions was like headings from different topics of the book, The essay portion nailed me and I ended up 30 less than required score. Among few known topics, It had WACC full question, Regression analysis theory, Working Capital Management Applications in scenarios and so on.

    Good Luck.

    Thank you so much sir.

    1) May i ask you to elaborate a little on "they asked in both the essay questions was like headings from different topics of the book".

    2) Also, do you suggest me to "learn" the theory like we used to do in college, or like a professional understand it. Do you think only understanding the theory is enough/ not enough?

    3) Also, what is the meaning of "Working Capital Management Applications in scenarios", do you mean what if the short term loan increases and cash inflow increase, what will be the effect on the working capital?

I know it might be probably too much, but your answer might help many other aspirants as well.

All the best next time. And please do not let anyone persuade you to go into any details; as I see they are asking. It could be a violation of IMA professional ethics if you do.

    Hi Shaneiker,

May I please know how am i violating the IMA professional ethics by asking how should I prepare for theory? I am really confused as to what code have I violated by literally asking a generic question? Your reply might help many people who are seeking answers. Thank you so much.

I take the part2 exam during the first week of June.  I offer a strategy for preparing for the essay section.  As you go through each part of the material covered for part 2 exam, put yourself in the role of a business owner that seeks for his business survive -- if not thrive -- in the five years in front of him.  Everything we are presented as topics and formulas, etc. in the CMA program are tools to help a business succeed.  Try to write your essays from the standpoint of making your business succeed.  Maybe that will take some of the stress away from the essay section.  Treat it as an opportunity to address a business case.
I hope that helps us all!
