  • 1.  Weird question: How do you take breaks during the exams?

    Posted 01-02-2021 09:34 AM
The prometric center I use is really dry in the testing room, and I am having to always get a drink of water.  20 minutes sitting in the testing room, my mouth becomes a desert.

During the cpa exam I used every break screen I could to get drinks (and use the bathroom).

How can you get a drink of water with 100 straight MCQs?

Yes...It is a very weird way that Prometric center manages during the exam. If you take a break go to restroom, then you will lost time as (i)  they process a procedure to inform IMA that you go to the bathroom; (ii) using the bathroom.

It is good if they have a 5' break between MCQs & essay sections.

During my part 1 exam I had to go to the restroom and I made it very quick like 3 mins only. That's all my break was. Every minute counts.

Yes In this case Prometric should have some alternative.... espcailly break should be after MCQ's and before Essay questions.

That's a good question.  I can't find any guidance on this like the CPA exam.  I am assuming you can take a break (whether timed or untimed) between the 100 MCQs and the Essay questions, but hopefully someone can provide clarity on:

    1) When you click submit for the 100 MCQs, does the exam prompt you to continue on to the essays or does it just go straight into them?

i.e. This would be a good time to raise your hand and let the Prometric staff know you would like to take a break while you are between sections so it doesn't look like you are taking a break in the middle of a section.  On the CPA exam, taking a break during an active session could disqualify you/void the results...

    2) Does the clock continue running if a break is offered, or do you have to eat that time?

Hello.  In case you get 50% or more for the MCQs, you will automatically be directed to the Essays; there is no break; and the essay time starts counting immediately.

I took a break during my MCQ and Essays; I had to sign out, then checked in when I returned and had to sign in again; I lost about 7 min of my precious essay time.

If you can, try not to use a break. To do this, you may need to take less fluid on the exam day and use the bathroom before the exam starts.

    All the best!

    Hai,

There is no breaks between sections. If you require breaks please remember the same will consume your exam time. If you can save time in MCQ section you can utilise the same for essay.

    Thanks
