Study for the next part or wait?

  • 1.  Study for the next part or wait?

I just sat for the CMA part one today. I struggled with multiple choice and ran out of time. They seemed harder than my study material. I was surprised the essays opened up. On the other end of the spectrum my essays were my strong topics so I'm satisfied I did okay on them. Not sure what my odds are for passing.  I was hoping to sit for Part 2 in the May/June window but don't know if I should wait to see if I pass first? Thoughts and experiences greatly appreciated!

@Holly Chase - I would start studying for the next part as you won't find out your score until early March. When I studied for the CPA exam, I had to wait 2-3 months to find out my scores for the parts I took so I just started studying for the next part while waiting for the score release.

    Daniel Jo,
Thank you.  I will transition into studying for Part 2 and if I don't pass the Part 1 I will try and sit for one at the beginning of the May/June window and one at the end.  Thank you for your help!

I suggest you better start studying for the second part because even if you fail (which I wish you wont) you can take both parts on may/june window as you wont spend alot to review for part 1 ...

    Sherif,
I think this is my plan now that I've had a few hours to mull it over.  Thank you for your help!

@ Holy Chase - Hoping you will get through the exam. Best of luck!
i am a new member and planning to attempt part 1 in May or jun testing window. I need you to be detailed on why were you struggling with MCQs within time despite of having study material and good preparation. Is it due to a study material you have? Wiley, gleim or is it due to the reason that you didn't spend sufficient hours on exam preparation? Please share more thoughts and experiences to novices and any tip or suggestion you would like to give. Regards

    Muhammad,
I don't think I devoted enough time to studying at the end.  Also when taking practice tests at home I usually had a lot of time left over so I was overconfident I could use the same approach when taking the exam.  There were a lot of computational questions that were time consuming.  I should have, in hindsight, simply flagged ones that were longer/harder and gone through the ones I could answer quickly and then gone back to the ones that were more difficult.
I used Wiley and Surgent but I found Wiley to be the better of the two.  Good luck on your studying!

    Holly,
That's actually a very good test strategy - flag the questions that you know will take you some time and keep moving along. In the time it might take you to answer the time-consuming questions you might be able to answer 5-10 easy questions. That's what I did when I took Part 1, and I had enough time to go back and answer almost all of the questions I thought would take a lot of time.

    Hi Holly--

How much time did you take to study for Part 1?  I've been studying for a few months and am scheduled to take the test in June, but am unsure that my prep time will be adequate.

    Thanks!

    Sara

    Hi, Holly.

I am curious about "harder than my study material" you have mentioned.  Which material did you use?

I am using Wiley and Mometrix along with my textbooks and now wondering if I should look into other practice exams.

    Thank you in advance!

Same thing happened to me.  I used Wiley's material, textbook and online study program.  I made it through all the material, studied for about 4 months before work, after work and on weekends.  I'd anticipate I put in about 15-20 hours per week studying.  I really struggled with grasping many of the calculations.  I sat for Part 1 last Saturday and also ran out of time on the MCQ's, I had about 12-14 that I had to just guess answers on.  I didn't take any breaks during the 4.5 hour test.  Most of my questions required some type of calculation.  My approach to the test was to go through the entire test and answer only the ones I knew easily, then go back and work on the others.  Through that process I only flagged questions I knew were extremely difficult for me, so my second pass was to answer the unflagged, unanswered questions.  I didn't expect the essays to open up, but they did.  I think I ok, but I definitely didn't nail them.  I think my calculations on those were weak as well.  I'm proceeding with studying for Part 2 and have scheduled that for the first part of May.  I'm hoping that if I failed Part 1, giving myself May and most of June and retaking Part 1 the end of June will be enough.
