How Effective is Wiley Review Course?

    Hello,

    I have been studying for about 3 weeks now with Wiley.  I feel like I am grasping the concepts, but sometimes I feel like the practice questions involving calculations are pretty long in my review course.  Its not that the concepts are really that hard, just a lot of detail to deal with.  I am trying to get faster at dealing with all of the detail presented in the calculations because I know how important that will be on the exam.  I was wondering if anyone could share their experience in studying with Wiley and then taking the exam.  Do you feel like Wiley prepared you well for the exam? Were the questions on the exam harder than the Wiley material or not as hard?  Just looking for some feedback on this as sometimes the detail that Wiley presents seems like a lot on some sections at least.

    Hi Angela,

    I took both parts in the recently concluded window. I found that Wiley's standard is spot on for part 1. The questions on orthodox parts (A,B,C and D) are way ahead in quality and difficulty, getting a mastery on them would reasonably ensure a pass. For Parts E and F, most of the questions are outside of the scope of our LOS and would make us tensed and helpless.

    I felt the questions by Wiley on part 2 was simpler and  below the standard of exams. CMA tests deep on all the concepts of part 2, getting 90+ in Wiley's random test bank questions and mock exams did not necessarily ensure a smooth examination.

    With respect to online pre recorded classes, lectures by Mr. MONTE SWAIN is interesting and well set to gain a good understanding of the concepts. Other lecturers are not very satisfactory.

    Overall, Wiley's packages are good and is in frontline with respect to its competition. However, the above may be kept in mind for complete understanding.

    Hello Angela,

    It depends on your career history, the level of practical knowledge you have earned and your memory bank of educational accounting info. We could differ in our judgement on each CMA course provider, but finally the concepts are the same.
    Wiley is the official partner of IMA since long time, despite of the commercial benefits; I don't think IMA will recommend unqualified source to provide the required knowledge for CMA certification.

    If you have the full package, I recommend you to go through 11 hours review course, have a look on hot topics and IMA's Learning Outcome Statements. Don't waste your time (Like I did) jumping from video lectures to text overview to PDF textbook or Vital source.

    I believe that if we could finish Wiley's test bank and IMA's support package, that's will be enough for exam prep, paying attention to concept mastering & time efficiency.

    I agree with Mr. Amith about sections E & F in part 1. Memorizing IMA LOS definitions is the key point to solve any exam MSQ.
    Mr. Monte is the best lecturer I have ever watched, but sorry to say that Wiley should pick-up someone other than Mrs. Marjorie for teaching "financial analysis"

    Finally, if you mastered the LOS concept (as you are willing to teach it to someone else) you will be able to answer any question despite its structure or difficulty.

    Hi Hebah,

    Wiley's 11 hours course review is my biggest mistake I have ever done in my educational life. LooL
    It is included in Platinum package of Wiley CMAexcel review course which I had since I registered for IMA membership but unfortunately I didn't open it until I was out of time before Part-1 exam.
    .
    This summarized review course has (2) sections:
    1. Micro video lectures to explain & demonstrate exam tips & MSQ practice for only hot topics of CMA materials.
    2. IMA learning outcome statements, summarized in a very useful manner to be quickly memorized.
    .
    Am writing my real experience with part-1 to guide anyone who has this platinum package to avoid wasting time on writing notes, making highlights or even trying to summarize the materials overview text (Like what I did) while it is completely included in LOS review section. 
    I have done a test on that bit-size summary statements (LOS) and it was successful. I have quickly reviewed section A in part 2 only from LOS which can be printed on (7) pages (Imagine that !!!), then I took (22) MSQs diagnostic test. Actually I wasn't surprised when the result came with 90% (only 2 wrong answers out of 22) because I already had that idea in mind when I started part-1. 
    Am talking here about "Time" which is the Golden Coin we should save for other important issues, and efficient study "Technique" which helps us to master CMA core concepts.

    yes I see ..I have gold package not platinum that's why I don't have 11 hours course review but I am going to follow your advice and focus on LOS while studying part 2 and part 1 if I failed..thank u so much :)

    I'm sharing with you my experience using GLEIM books:

    I've been also studying for the past 4-5 weeks and felt the same as you did when reading the study unit materials and felt grasping up to 80% of the concepts and formulas and all the related details (including IFRS differences from GAAP).
    However, when i reached the practice questions and did the study sessions on GLEIM online were taking too much time and more than often the answers were wrong.
    I referred to a friend who already did the test, he said that the practice questions we have in the study sessions are way harder than the actual CMA exam questions. So technically, the more we're practicing the more we're learning from our mistakes and in the hard way.

    Thank you Amith, Samer and Elias, I appreciate the information.  I agree, Monte Swain is the best lecturer I have seen with the Wiley material.  I think just practicing the calculation questions over and over and making sure I fully understand the LOS concepts will help a lot.  I have an accounting degree and work in accounting, but I am a beginning level accountant, so some of the advanced topics I have only seen in accounting class and have not done in my job yet.  I think it is good advice to learn and understand the material well enough to teach it someone else.  That is something I will work toward doing.  I do have the platinum version of Wiley and I plan on doing the 11th hour review course.

    I am from the Oklahoma City area and the two of you are the closest location to me I've seen in my 6 months of being on this board. I am using the Gleim materials and am awaiting results from both parts. I took Part 2 in Jan and Part 1 in Feb however, I am continuing to study just in case I did not pass. Part 2 felt easier to me but I think partly because it related more to my work as an accountant as opposed to the Part 1 material. Understanding the concepts is definitely key because then you can apply it to the question regardless of the actual numbers or wording used. Best of Luck to both of you.
