    Dear All,

    While taking some IMA part 2 exames, I have seen couple of questions on the product mix model which is something is not in part 2 Gleim study materials.

    I appreciate if you can share your knowledge on that model, and how the following questions can be resolved.

    Question 1

    Manders Manufaturing Corporation uses the following model to determine its product mix for metal (M) and scrap (S).

    Max Z = $30 M + $70 S
                 Where: 3M + 2S < 15
                    and  : 2M + 4S < 15

    The point where M = 2 and S = 3 would

    1. be an infeasible point
    2. be a feasible point        the correct answer
    3. lie in a corner
    4. be the optimal solution point

    Question 2

    Manders Manufaturing Corporation uses the following model to determine its product mix for metal (M) and scrap (S).

    Max Z = $30 M + $70 S
                 Where: 3M + 2S < 15
                    and  : 2M + 4S < 15

    The two inequality functions are

    1. contributions
    2. conditions
    3. objectives
    4. constraints                       the correct answer

    Question 3

    Manders Manufaturing Corporation uses the following model to determine its product mix for metal (M) and scrap (S).

    Max Z = $30 M + $70 S
                 Where: 3M + 2S < 15
                    and  : 2M + 4S < 15

    These mathematical functions are an example of a(n)

    1. present value model
    2. linear programing tool                   the correct answer
    3. economic order quantity model
    4. simulation model

    Hala Mohamed

    the question you are attempting to solve is an LPP (linear programming problem) question. this topic is not included in the revised CMA material. the topic was in chapter 14, part 1 of the previous gleim syllabus when CMA was a four part exam.

    anyway the solution to your question is as follows:

    answer 3:

    the equation is an example of LPP tool (mentioned above)

    answer 2:

    3M + 2S < 15
    2M + 4S < 15

    the equations of inequality are called constraints with in which your answer should lie on a piece of graph or in equation. hence, called constraints.

    answer 1:

    to say whether the point is feasible or not or whether it lies on the border, we need to solve the constraint equations.

    3m+2s=15 ------- 1
    2m+4s=15 ------- 2

    equating 1 and 2

    3m+2s = 2m+4s
    1m = 2s

    now substituting this back in constraint, we get

    8s = 15
    s = 15/8

    now substituting the value of s back in the constraint, we get

    m = 15/4

    now the point where m = 2 and s = 4 would be,

    2 x 15/4 + 3 x 15/8 = 13.125

    since 13.125 < 15, this point lies with in the constraint equation. hence, it is a feasible point.

    this rules out our answer option of unfeasible point. the answer is also not an optimal solution point as the answer is less than 15, which would have been the optimal solution point. and finally, the answer does not lie in a corner cause if it did, the solution points would have been 0m + 8s = 15 or 4m + 0s = 15 i.e. one variable point would have to be a 0.

    i hope this answer is in the general benefit of the group and was of some help to you as well in clearing your doubts and confusion about such questions.
